Domain squatting   1 comment

Due to a miscommunication with my hosting company, someone took over my name domain! I’m working on it now, and hope to have a new domain available soon. What sucks is that I still have hosting for the next few months, so the material I had posted is still there somewhere, but now I’ll have to remap the domain to the documents. #$%@#!!!

Migrating info   Leave a comment

My personal web site crashed recently. More accurately, the server that was hosting the site crashed, and the site had to be ported to a new server with my hosting company. The resulting confusion caused my content management system to lose its mind, and my domains are cross-wired.

End result: I’m going to be using this weblog for more of my academic presence while I try to figure out what I want to do with the other site, and how to straighten out the domain name mess.

Sadly, Gervais calls it quits   Leave a comment

Ricky Gervais is going to end his popular podcasts. I’ve purchased every one so far, fool that I am. Hilarious, but even I’d admit that the material was beginning to circle back on itself.

And I can’t say that this is a surprise. After all, Gervais killed the original “The Office” after only 12 shows and a couple of specials. He seems to have a knack for knowing when to say “when” on a successful comic venture.

Croc hunter Irwin dead at 44   Leave a comment

Steve Irwin, the “Crocodile Hunter,” died over the weekend.

The BBC has details:

Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray during a diving expedition off the Australian coast.

Mr Irwin, 44, died after being struck in the chest by the stingray’s barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef.

Apparently, he died from the wound itself, which pierced his heart, rather than the venom from the stingray.

He is survived by a wife and two children. My thoughts are with his family.

The U.S. Health Care Industry is completely !@#%#$   Leave a comment

I’m employed. I have insurance. I think the U.S. system of “insurance”, “flexible spending accounts” and elastic medical/pharmaceutical costs are completely screwed up and in need of serious fixing.

It almost takes a degree in finance to understand the various “options” presented to most of us during the round of benefits form signings we go through when (if) we are hired at a new job with benefits. I’m bewildered. And somehow, deep down, I know that the insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmaceuticals are all still making loads of money off the average citizen who is just trying to get by and make sure they don’t lose the house if their kid breaks a leg.

I know, it’s cynical. But prove I’m wrong.

Sign #12,313 that I live on the other coast   Leave a comment

I’d never even think to use the phrases “affordable” and “1,831 sq. feet” in the same neighborhood as the numeral “$349,500.” Of course, I’m in rural Virginia, not Bakersfield, California. I’m currently trying to sell1,250 sq. feet for about $115,000 in South Carolina, and I consider that “affordable.”

All kidding aside, if anyone reading this is in the market for a house in Bakersfield, Howard may have a deal for you.

Politics explained   Leave a comment

Okay, so this is probably very old, but I found it today using StumbleUpon, the extremely addictive plug-in for FireFox. Steve Jackson’s version of "Politics Explained."

I especially enjoyed this one:

BUREAUCRACY: You have two cows. At first the government regulates what you can feed them and when you can milk them. Then it pays you not to milk them. Then it takes both, shoots one, milks the other and pours the milk down the drain. Then it requires you to fill out forms accounting for the missing cows.
